First Frost Finishing Salt
Tart cranberry, Crisp sage. A bright crunch that wakes up the plate.
First Frost is a finishing salt, made for the last moment before food reaches the table. A pinch over sliced turkey, a pork roast, roasted squash, or buttered greens adds a bright crunch, a pop of tart cranberry, and a crisp note of sage. Over warm cookies or chocolate, it does the same job in reverse, adding salt and tartness against the sweetness. It goes on just before serving, off the heat, so every flake arrives intact.
Flaky salt is built to dissolve on the tongue, not in the pan. Sprinkled on at the end, the flakes stay whole, so each bite releases salt and cranberry in small bursts instead of spreading evenly through the food. Those bursts against a rich or sweet background are what make the plate taste brighter. Sumac carries the cranberry's tartness into the sage so the finish tastes connected. Heat and moisture melt the flakes, and the effect flattens into ordinary seasoning. That's why timing matters more than amount.
How to Use First Frost
Primary Uses: Sliced roast turkey; pork roast and pork chops; roasted squash and sweet potatoes; buttered green beans, Brussels sprouts, and sautéed greens.
What to expect: A bright, tart crunch that lifts rich food and makes it taste lighter without adding acidity to the dish itself.
Secondary Uses: Warm cookies and chocolate; mashed potatoes and gravy; warm buttered rolls; soft cheeses on a holiday board.
What to expect: Small bursts of salt and cranberry against something soft, rich, or sweet.
Not Ideal For: Cooking, marinades, or brines; stirring into soups, sauces, or anything wet, where the flakes dissolve and the crunch disappears. The jar also does best with the lid closed tight, since cranberry draws moisture from a humid kitchen.
Start here
Sliced Roast Turkey: Slice the turkey onto the platter. Sprinkle a pinch across the slices just before it goes to the table.
What to Notice
Sliced Roast Turkey: The richness lifts, with a tart pop in every bite.
Roasted Squash, straight from the oven: Sweet squash meets tart cranberry and crunch.
Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies: The chocolate tastes darker, and the cranberry adds a bright edge to every bite.
The Final Pinch Test: Same dish, brighter plate. The difference is the timing and the crunch, not just the flavor.
What First Frost Adds to Food
- Flaky sea salt leads the experience. It brings the crunch and the seasoning in one move.
- Cranberry carries real fruit tartness, used in a large enough amount to taste like cranberry rather than just tint the salt pink.
- Sage brings a crisp herbal note that belongs on a holiday plate.
- Sumac sits between them, tying the tart fruit to the herb so the two taste like one idea.
- Black pepper adds a light lift at the end.
Ingredients
Flaky sea salt, cranberry, sage, sumac, black pepper.
Works Well With

Add a pinch over pulled pork shoulder or sliced short ribs. Cranberry brightens the cinnamon and orange the way cranberry sauce does.

Add a few flakes over buttered rolls straight from the oven.

Add flakes over warm brownies after the Firelight dusting.

Add a few flakes on molasses cookies straight from the oven. Cranberry and ginger work well together.
